A common question that comes from individuals who are going to have surgery is, “How long is the recovery process?”. A key component of that answer is, “How well did you prepare?”…”How many additional deficits do you have (tightness, weakness, compensations, swelling) that could slow down your recovery”?; that is where “Prehabiliation” comes in.
Pre-habilitation is the process in which an individual receives physical therapy prior to their surgery so that they physically optimize the range of motion, strength, and function of a joint/muscle prior to receiving surgery. This can lead to a much faster recovery and a shorter time in physical therapy after surgery for many of the functional barriers that will need to be addressed during physical therapy will already have been addressed. After surgery, there is additional pain and inflammation that makes it sometimes difficult to address some of a person’s functional needs; prior to surgery some of the limiting pain/inflammation isn’t present allowing these to be addressed. A physical therapist will not only assess the joint in question, but also the joints/muscles above and below the affected joint. If you are scheduled to have surgery, contact one of our physical therapists to find out if you would benefit from “Pre-habilitation”. |
